A day "on"
MLK holiday provides opportunity for service


UNO’s Service Learning Academy sponsored a day of service Jan. 19. Alumnus Tim Kaldahl, director of University Relations, posted this video on his Maverickland blog:





The video was shot with a School of Communication Flip video camera. The technology is being piloted for use by students in an Online Media course to be offered this fall.


Osage News
Lamsam to serve on editorial board


Teresa Lamsam is one of three Osage journalists selected to serve on the Osage News editoral board.


The board will serve as a buffer between the Chief’s office and the Nation’s official newspaper.

The board may propose legislation to create a nonprofit organization under which the newspaper will operate, Lamsam said: "...this will be an entirely new model for Indian Country."

Mike Sherer has launched a new photography blog on Wordpress.

UNO Forensics
Playing in Peoria

The UNO Forensic team "split squad" Jan. 17-18 – sending one group of students to Peoria, Illinois, and another to Seward, Nebraska. Each group had tremendous success.

Results from Hell Froze Over, hosted by Bradley University and the University of Texas at Austin, January 17th-18th – At this national warm-up tournament, three UNO students advanced to final rounds.

Saturday, January 17th

Cameron Logsdon earned 3rd place in Poetry. Matt Eledge advanced to semifinals in Program of Oral Interpretation.

Sunday, January 18th

Matt Eledge placed 4th in Poetry and advanced to semifinals in Dramatic Interpretation. Iven Mendoza placed 6th in Program of Oral Interpretation.

UNO placed 2nd in overall team sweepstakes. Blaine Miller Championed Duo with Laurie Welch. He also placed 4th in Informative Speaking, 7th in Prose, and 7th in Dramatic Interpretation. Blaine also earned 3rd place in overall individual Quadrathon. Danielle Steen was the Champion of Informative Speaking. Niveditha Rajagopalan placed 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking. Laurie Welch Championed Duo with Blaine Miller. She also placed 2nd in Informative Speaking and 4th in Dramatic Interpretation. Cortney Griffith placed 2nd in Dramatic Interpretation and 3rd in Duo with Tessie Stednitz.


Sunday, January 18th

UNO again placed 2nd in overall team sweepstakes. Blaine Miller Championed Duo with Laurie Welch. He also placed 6th in Informative Speaking. Blaine also earned 3rd place in overall individual Quadrathon. Danielle Steen placed 4th in Informative Speaking. UNO Forensics traveled to Manhattan, KS last weekend.

Excellence in action

Adam Tyma was interviewed Jan. 20 by KPTM (Fox 42) about the “wired” factor of inauguration day, including the use of Web-based technologies. Their focus was on how new communication technology has changed the way people experienced the event. “They aired the part of the discussion where I talked about how mobile network devices (iPhones, Blackberries, smartphones) helped people become part of the moment regardless of where they were on the planet and how this networked existence is truly part of our lives now,” Tyma said.

Jeremy Lipschultz was a guest on The Tom Becka ShowJan. 22 on KFAB. He discussed a broadcast indecency controversy of the music lyrics in the new Brittney Spears hit song “If You Seek Amy.” Lipschultz offers a detailed explanation on his blog.
